Tenere’s foundational brand ethos strongly reflects the value it places on (i) protecting the environment, (ii) providing dignified, fair, and safe work to its employees, workers, and contractors and (iii) progressing and advancing our society and its people toward a sustainable future. The below sections outline our basic policies, commitments, and required disclosures.

Transparency
Tenere places significant value on radical transparency and seeks to set the standard in the industry for how and what detail it provides to its customers and audiences. We created a web-based transparency experience via QR code that share specific details around our certifications and standards, a component-level sourcing matrix for our supply chain, our environmental footprint and our strategy to reduce and offset, ethical worker pay, detail, and policies, a full chronological product journey through our supply chain, and finally -- programs for our garment’s end of life. As we grow, we will continue to aggregate information on everything that we do so that we can put it into a digestible format for all of our customers and audiences.

Traceability in Tenere’s Supply Chain
Tenere’s supply chain is based on a system of tiers. These tiers represent “arms lengths” from Tenere from a contracting perspective. For example, Tenere directly contracts with a garment manufacturer as its main supplier of finished goods (Tier 1). The garment manufacturer generally sub-contracts with suppliers that provide them with other components (e.g. fabric, inks, dyes, finishes, etc.) that make up the finished goods (in relation to Tenere, this is a Tier 2 supplier). The party who supplies our garment manufacturer with fabric, for example, contracts with the supplier of the yarns used to knit/weave into the fabric (in relation to Tenere, this is a Tier 3 supplier). Our sourcing matrix shows the full list of suppliers for each component and service within our supply chain. Tenere has relationships or has made direct contact with most, but not all, of the subcontractors within its supply chain. At certain times though, Tenere trusts and relies on its direct contractors to subcontract from ethical suppliers that uphold the standards of Tenere’s Ethical Code of Conduct. In order to operate with the highest standard of ethical sourcing and holistic supply chain sustainability, Tenere vets suppliers across the globe before it chooses to engage with them. Tenere believes that the manufacturers and suppliers it has chosen to engage with are on the forefront of both manufacturing technology and ethical manufacturing and they have values that align with Tenere’s. We believe that these are optimal partnerships that will help carry out Tenere’s mission.

Emissions
Our approach to managing carbon emissions starts with (1) reducing and minimizing emissions within our production processes and corporate practices and then (2) offsetting the emissions that are and were currently unavoidable considering economic, financial, and technological constraints.

Our company has or will purchase commitments or certificates from reputable organizations that commit to offset our emissions. We choose these organizations after thorough diligence and an understanding of the type and quality of offsets they use. As we grow, we will continue to develop and diversify the ways in which we choose to offset our emissions through our own means and/or by purchasing commitments or certificates from reputable organizations. The types of offsets we choose may include planting trees (considering the types of trees, the location of where the trees are planted, who is planting the trees, how and for how long they will be maintained, etc.), purchasing renewable energy certificates to promote the continued growth and development of renewable energy and shift away from fossil-fuel energy, investing directly in sustainable technology (e.g. carbon capture/recapture) purchasing general carbon credits, and other strategies we believe reasonably contribute to a future of net-zero carbon emissions.

We acknowledge that just offsetting our emissions is not enough and that is why we aim to reduce emissions first, and only offset what remains. We acknowledge further that many emissions offsetting methods and organizations do not provide the benefit to the environment that contributes to a net-zero future and that is why we thoroughly diligence our methods and the organizations that we partner with.

We are in the process of developing and finalizing our offsetting strategy so the emission footprint that we have left historically, may not yet be offset.

Water
Textile production often involves water-intensive processes. Our approach to managing water usage and waste starts with (1) reducing and minimizing water use and waste within our production processes and corporate practices and then (2) offsetting the water usage and waste that are and were currently unavoidable considering economic, financial, and technological constraints.

We aim to offset the water that is used or wasted in our production processes through multiple programs. One such program involves the purchase of Water Restoration Certificates (WRCs) that contribute to the replenishment of water in lakes, rive, etc. We choose to work with organizations that are recommended by public agencies that aim to compensate owners and conserve areas that might benefit from water conservation most. Another program offsets water usage with the purchase of things like power-efficient water pumps, drip irrigation projects, etc.

We acknowledge that just offsetting our water usage and waste is not enough and that is why we aim to reduce water usage and waste first, and only offset what remains. We acknowledge further that many water offsetting methods and organizations do not provide the benefit to the environment that contributes to a more sustainable future and that is why we thoroughly diligence our methods and the organizations that we partner with.

We are in the process of developing and finalizing our offsetting strategy so the water usage and waste footprint that we have left historically, may not yet be offset.

Waste
While many of our garments and/or packaging are made with recycled inputs, many of them are not recyclable (based on recycling technology in the market today). Even when garments and/or packaging are considered fully recyclable after use, whether or not the garment is properly recycled often depends on our customers’ choices.

We aim to offset the synthetic/plastic waste that may potentially be caused by our garments and packaging by facilitating (or facilitated on our behalf) the removal and recovery of the equivalent amount of plastic pollution from the environment. We intend to develop this program and execute it through a partnership with a third party that will facilitate the collection, processing, and reuse of ocean-bound or land-bound plastic waste.

We acknowledge that just offsetting our plastic use is not enough and that is why we aim to reduce use of plastic first, and only offset what remains. We acknowledge further that many plastic/waste offsetting methods and organizations do not provide the benefit to the environment that contributes to a more sustainable future and that is why we thoroughly diligence our methods and the organizations that we partner with.

We are in the process of developing and finalizing our offsetting strategy so the plastic/waste footprint that we have left historically, may not yet be offset.

TeneRE:wear Program

In an effort to extend garment useful life, items returned in fixable condition will be refurbished and either (1) resold to the public under a TeneRewear tag or (2) donated. Further, we believe economic status should not be a barrier to wearing premium products; therefore, we sell these refurbished garments to interested consumers at a material discount.

TeneRE:pair Program

Tenere products are built to last. And, to help eliminate overconsumption, the TenereRepair program will allow consumers to send Tenere damaged or worn clothing and get them repaired for a small fee.

TeneRE:cycle Program

Based on Tenere’s commitment to reuse, TeneRecycle allows customers to return their used garments for recycling by Tenere. Because of the current yarn composition in our products, they cannot be recycled into a garment of equal or greater quality at this time. However, these items can be downcycled into something of lower quality (e.g. carpet), until our garment construction allows for recyclability.

Child Labor
Tenere does not directly or indirectly engage in or support the use of child labor. Documentation should be kept to demonstrate that all workers are of the legal working age and no younger than 15 years old.

Further, in instances where younger workers (under 21 year of age) are attending school or similar education programs, it is expected that vendors, to the extent feasible, will be accommodating of their class schedule and allow for flexible time where needed.

Forced Labor & Human Trafficking
Tenere does not directly or indirectly engage in or support the use of forced or coerced labor. This includes but is not limited to slave labor, prison labor, and human trafficking.

All employees who work for Tenere or are involved in Tenere’s production process must have free will to leave their respective workplace upon completion of a workday and maintain the ability to terminate employment should they so choose.

Additionally, suppliers may not withhold benefits, remuneration, or legal documents that have been earned or are owned by an employee.

Documentation should be kept to demonstrate that all workers are of the legal working age and no younger than 15 years old.

Wages & Benefit
All employees who work for Tenere or are involved in Tenere’s production process must be paid a fair wage, which must not be lower than the legal standard in that region. Further, wages must be sufficient to meet basic human needs, without regard to imposed regulation. Overtime should be compensated at a premium rate and should not be lower than what is mandated by local regulation.

Employees are entitled to all wages earned. Employers may not deduct or delay wages as a form of disciplinary action or withhold earned wages under any circumstances.

All employee wages and benefits must be clearly documented and cannot be withheld at the end of the employee’s term, once wages have already been earned.

Hours of Work
Vendors must limit working hours as regulated by law. Further, regardless of local regulation, a “regular” or “standard” workweek should not exceed 48 hours and a workweek with overtime should not exceed 60 hours.

All employees must receive 24 consecutive hours off within a seven day period.

Overtime may not be required by the employer. Any overtime worked should be entirely at the volition of the employee, and overtime should only be assigned upon the formal request of the employee.

Freedom of Association & Collective Bargaining
All employees have the right to freedom of association, collective bargaining, and the right to be part of a union. Employers may not penalize, coerce, intimidate, or discriminate against any worker who is associated with a union, association, or collective bargaining agreement.

No Discrimination, Harassment, or Abuse
Tenere does not engage in nor support any form of discriminatory or abusive behaviors associated with the hiring, promotions, salary, or terminations and general treatment of its employees or workers. Tenere is committed to treating all humans equally and providing them the same opportunities, regardless of their race, sexual orientation, creed, religion, nationality, disability, appearance, age, political preferences, or any other similar attributes.

Further, Tenere’s workplace should be conducive to freedom of ritual and other personal expressions, without any adverse effects or consequences.

No employee or other stakeholder of Tenere should ever be subject to physical, verbal, sexual, psychological or any other form of harassment or abuse.

Tenere vendors and all other stakeholder shall not engage in any similar discriminatory acts and should provide equal opportunity, both as referenced above.

Disciplinary Action
Tenere employees, and employees of Tenere vendors, must be treated with respect and dignity. No forms of abusive behavior, be it verbal or physical, are ever acceptable acts of discipline. Should the employee request it, any and all disciplinary acts must be formally documented by the employer, without consequence to the employee.

Health & Safety
Employers are responsible for the health and safety of all employees when on company premises, manufacturing partner facilities, or dormitories. This includes but is not limited to protection from disease and physical occupational hazard. Full efforts should be made by employers to fully minimize risk in the workplace, to the extent reasonably possible.

In instances where mitigation of the facility’s inherent risk is not possible, the employer must provide appropriate, functional protective equipment such as helmets, masks, goggles, etc. Further, in such instances, proper hazard warnings should be clearly presented, and related safety trainings should be provided to every employee before starting their work.

Safety procedures should be reviewed periodically, to ensure facility changes are accurately captured within the new protocols.

Workplace & Dormitory Conditions
All workspaces should have clean, hygienic, and functional restrooms for use by all employees. Access to clean water and clean eating areas for meal breaks must also be provided.

Dormitories, if provided, must be dignified, sanitary, and safe, and meet, at a minimum, basic humane living needs. This includes but is not limited to access to clean running water and sanitary bathrooms and showers. Further, in addition the aforementioned standards, dormitories must be compliant with regional regulatory health and safety standards.

All personnel must have the right, at all times, to remove themselves, should they choose, from any facility or dormitory.

Environmental Responsibility
Tenere is committed to creating an environmentally responsible product and acknowledges its responsibility to the planet. Tenere has designed, and continues to develop, its manufacturing processes such that it minimizes its (1) environmental footprint as it relates to its energy consumption and related carbon and other emissions, (2) water usage, (3) water waste, (4) material waste, (5) chemical toxins and waste, and (6) its various other environmental touchpoints.

Tenere manufacturing partners must have their own environmental policies which they adhere to, in addition to being compliant with government regulation regarding environmental laws.
